A desire to interact with the neighborhood transforms an unused front yard.
Situated in the Dekum Triangle of Northeast Portland, this modern farmhouse suffered from an unsightly retaining wall and exposed front yard, which created an unwelcoming space.
The existing mixed stone and concrete retaining wall was replaced with a Juniper landscape timber retaining wall. Inset into the wall are concrete steps and pavers, providing an interesting mix of materials, and direct access to the front door from the sidewalk.
The remaining space above the retaining wall was transformed into a gravel patio. Which seamlessly transitions into casual low water plantings.
